MKA Kindergartners Help Support Wildlife in the Wetlands
Posted 04/30/2012 08:49AM

Kindergarten students at Montclair Kimberley Academy recently participated in a hands-on volunteer effort to help support bird life in the Meadowlands District.

With the organizational help of MKA parent Christine Sanz, Chief Counsel at the Meadowlands Commission, the 44 students painted and decorated 30 new nesting boxes for tree swallows.  The activity, part of a larger Eagle Scout Award project, supports on-going efforts to replace damaged boxes along the Meadowlands trails and in the marshes.

After painting the boxes, the students used iPads to further research the life cycle and habitat of tree swallows on the Internet and completed journal pages with pictures and facts from their studies.

They will get to see their birdhouses “in situ” when they enjoy a field trip to the Meadowlands in May.
