This past weekend, MKA students put on an amazing performance at the local AAPI Montclair Lunar New Year event at the Montclair Art Museum! The event featured a variety of cultural performances from local AAPI groups, including traditional lion and dragon dances, K-Pop music, and martial arts demonstrations.
Students from our 8th and 9th grade Chinese classes wore “MKAAAPI” sweatshirts and performed a graceful and dynamic Taichi Fan dance, which featured fluid movements and precise choreography. Upper School students in our AAPI Affinity Group presented The Umbrella Dance, where girls were dressed in traditional costumes, held floral purple umbrellas, and performed synchronized movements to music. In Asian cultures, The Umbrella Dance is often performed as a symbol of the arrival of spring.
Additionally, MKA’s Asian Cultural Society and AAPI Affinity Group set up a craft table to help kids make origami and raise awareness about the diverse cultures and traditions within it. Event organizers praised the MKA students and teachers for their passion and dedication, and thanked them for helping to make the event a huge success!
