A History-Making Season for MKA Tennis Players and Coach Wing

MKA Varsity Girls’ Tennis completed the 2023 fall season by achieving historic success in a program with a long-standing tradition of excellence. On October 19, number one singles player Nina Abalos ’26 captured the NJSIAA Tennis Singles State Championship and is only the second MKA tennis singles player in school history to capture the overall singles title, a feat accomplished 20 years ago by MKA Hall of Famer Chisako Sugiyama ’05 who won the title in 2003. In addition, the doubles team of Hannah Lewis ’24 and Katie Chung ’24 took home second place in the NJSIAA Tennis Doubles Championship.

On October 24, the team beat long-time rival Newark Academy 3-2 to win the SEC American Division title. The following day, the team won the Prep B finals after being seeded first in every flight. The team finishes the season with a 19-1 record and is ranked number three in the nj.com rankings.

Congratulations are also due to longtime Varsity Girls’ Tennis Head Coach Bill Wing who garnered his 400th career win this season. Coach Wing’s career record currently stands at 412-112 (79% winning percentage) in 26 years as the head coach for the Cougars.
