On Tuesday, May 20, MKA hosted a reception to recognize The Community Scholars Program and its graduating Class of 2025 members. Established in 1969 by the Board of Trustees at Montclair Academy, the Community Scholars Program is the school’s longest-standing commitment to its Financial Aid Program, adding diversity to the student body and making an MKA education accessible to students with exceptional academic and personal potential.
Beginning with one student scholarship in the 1969-1970 school year, the program now provides complete financial support for nine students per year in grades six through 12. This scholarship is awarded to students who represent a racial or ethnic minority, show exceptional academic potential, embrace the values of the MKA community, and demonstrate full financial need.
This year’s event honored two Community Scholar seniors who are graduating: Eniola Adebola and Deanna Martinez (who was unable to attend). Both Eniola and Deanna have made indelible marks on the MKA community through their leadership and commitment to growth. During the evening, alumnus and proud Community Scholar Jordan Andrews ’17 gave brief remarks reflecting on the many opportunities MKA afforded him and the mindset the school instilled in him. Sharing his journey from joining the football team in seventh grade to traveling to Chile through the student exchange program, he emphasized the importance of curiosity, courage, and embracing new experiences with a “Why not?” spirit. He credited MKA and the Community Scholars Program with expanding his worldview and helping him build lasting confidence. In a heartfelt message to current scholars, he urged them to recognize the support they’ve received and to pay it forward: “Be a fountain, not a drain…don’t be afraid to ask “Why not?” Broadcast your talents and creativity with the world, and pave the way for those who come after.”
The reception concluded with recognition and appreciation of donors who make the Community Scholars Program possible. Community Scholars receive the most comprehensive financial assistance that the school offers, covering the full cost of tuition and all additional costs, including, but not limited to, books, lunch, transportation, and athletic equipment. Through the program, MKA extends its mission by providing life-changing opportunities that foster intellectual growth, ethical development, and personal success.
