What happens when an MKA graduate and a legendary Yale a cappella group come together? Pure magic, of course! On Thursday, April 3, John Colbert ’20, returned to campus as a member of the renowned Yale Whiffenpoofs to work with our Upper School Jazz Choir and REMIX a cappella group.
Twenty-five MKA students participated in a two-hour workshop led by the Whiffenpoofs, where they were taught a new song. The students then sang a few songs from their repertoire for feedback in a master class setting. After the workshop, the Whiffenpoofs performed for the Upper School community during an assembly. Later that evening, they also performed at St. Luke's Episcopal Church in Montclair. For both performances, the group invited REMIX and the Jazz Choir to join them in singing the song they had learned in the workshop. Upper School Choral Music Director Maria Gilmartin said, "The day was an incredible and inspiring experience for our students and a truly fantastic day of music for MKA."
Many students expressed how the workshop was both educational and inspiring. Alex Crespo ’26 shared, "The Whiffenpoof workshop helped us improve on our musicianship and expanded our knowledge on how to collaborate with one another. Another thing I learned was the importance of keeping music in your everyday life even if it isn’t your career." Katie Holzer ’26 said, “My experience with the Whiffenpoofs was truly one of a kind! My classmates and I were able to learn essential vocal tips from professional performers and observe how, for some, singing can be a lifestyle.”
The workshop and afternoon performance were full-circle moments, highlighting the lasting impact of a strong community. MKA has a vibrant arts program that nurtures students' creativity across various disciplines. Opportunities such as this provide valuable learning opportunities that foster connections between alumni and current students, ultimately giving MKA students a step ahead in their preparation while encouraging them to explore and deepen their passions.
