MKA Celebrates the Season with Winter Concerts

Students, families, faculty, and staff joined together to celebrate and share in the magic of the holiday season during the Winter Concerts on each campus.

On Thursday, December 8 the Middle School choirs performed their annual winter concert with a focus on themes of wintertime and fond memories of holidays past. Middle School Chorus Teacher Kyle Blackburn was excited for his first concert at MKA, and each choir's hard work was on full display! [VIEW PHOTOS]

On Friday, December 9 Weiss Auditorium was filled with the sound of students performing for a full house. It was a terrific night of upbeat songs from Concert Choir, Chamber Singers, Jazz Choir, and Remix. The Advanced Strings joined Chamber Singers for a few classical pieces of music as well. The Jazz Choir sang a few standards, Remix performed two new songs, and all 65 student performers came together for the finale! It was a fantastic night for the choral program and we're looking forward to the competitions and spring concerts next semester. [VIEW PHOTOS]

Congratulations to the 53 members of the MKA Upper School Bands as they performed a spectacular Winter Concert on Tuesday, December 13 in Weiss Auditorium! Featuring 16 soloists, the Concert and Jazz Bands played music ranging from Cab Calloway's "Minnie The Moocher," to the Charlie Brown classic "Christmastime is Here," to a piece celebrating the music of western Africa. For the latter, master drummer and parent, Mten Halsey, played an inspiring djembe solo.  As a tribute to Queen Elizabeth's philanthropy, the Concert Band played the British March, "Crown Imperial." We are grateful that MKA supports the arts as a critical component of a complete education. [VIEW PHOTOS]

On Wednesday, December 14 our new Middle School Band Director Paul Murphy led the band students in a Winter Concert for a full house of family and friends. The 36 members of the fourth grade band made their debut, sharing their newly acquired skills as instrumentalists. The fifth grade band made an impressive appearance on their own, followed by the upper house bands. The sixth, seventh, and eighth grade bands showed off their talents individually before combining together for the grand finale which filled the entire stage. It was a great night full of music, joy, and laughter, and we’re looking forward to more opportunities to make great music in the spring! [VIEW PHOTOS]

Lastly, the Primary School Auditorium was alive with the singing and ringing of the handbells and choirchimes at their Winter Concert on Friday, December 16. Third graders rang their bells for “Pachelbel’s Canon” and “Greensleeves” and sang “The Ukrainian Carol,” a Ukrainian folk chant. The Second Grade sang “Habari Gani,” a beautiful song about Kwanzaa and a challenging French Piece called “On écrit sur les murs.” First Grade sang about Hanukah and a lively Spanish piece “Qué Buena Suerte.” Kindergarten thrilled Dr. Flocco with his favorite piece “Must Be Santa” and Pre-Kindergarten made their debut by singing “This Little Light of Mine.”

The entire Primary School Student Body sang a duet called “Winter is Coming” and the entire community came together to sing “When the Lights All Shine” by Teresa Jennings for the finale. All the students held candles and the faculty lit their candles one by one to celebrate unity. It was a wonderful day for all who performed and a special treat for the guests who attended!
