MKA Teams Capture Prep B Championships

It has been a busy and successful spring for MKA athletes, and three teams have earned NJ Prep B State Championships. "Our athletes are performing at the highest levels and their hard work has paid off,” said Director of Athletics Todd Smith. "We are so proud of these team championships and also wish all of our athletes luck as they continue their respective seasons in the NJSIAA State Tournament Championships."
 

Congratulations to Head Coach Val Azzoli and the Varsity Boys’ Tennis team (13-4) who captured the NJ Prep B Championship. With four individual flight champions, the Cougars were able to distance themselves for the team title over Dwight Englewood. 

Coach Azzoli said, “It’s been a very fulfilling and succrssfull season: successfull because we won the Prep B Tournament and ended up being ranked # 6 in the overall State ranking for  public and non public schools. Fulfilling because we had fun accomplishing this success, which is the most important aspect of the season.” 

Bringing home Gold Medals in their individual flights were: 

  • 2nd Singles - Sean Wang ’25
  • 3rd Singles - Chris Hernadez ’24
  • 1st Doubles - Camron Ganchi ’25 and Sam Turovets ’24
  • 2nd Doubles - Alex Crespo ‘26 and Santos Garner ’26. 

In addition, Luis Crespo ’24 took home Silver at 1st Singles.

 

Congratulations to Head Coach Tim White, Assistant Coach Sarah Bradley, Coach Webber, Coach McDonald, Coach Frankie, and the MKA Varsity Boys’ Track & Field Team for capturing their first NJ Prep B Championship in program history! Coach White said, "This championship was won thanks to the most balanced, well-rounded boys' team we've ever had. We filled out all the event groups beautifully, scoring 20 points in sprints, 28 points in jumps, 28 points in hurdles, 24 points in distance, and 28 points in throws." 

The team was led by junior Kalvin Thomas, who earned 38 team points, winning the 100m, 200m, and Long Jump, while also placing 2nd in the Triple behind 1st place finisher, fellow junior Abkes Halsey.


 

Congratulations to Head Coach Chelsea Goss and the Varsity Girls’ Lacrosse Team (17-2) who defeated Princeton Day 18-9 this afternoon to capture their second straight NJ Prep B Lacrosse Championship on Van Brunt Field in Montclair. The Cougars were led by Aeryn Curren ’24 (4 goals/4 assists), Shea Murphy ‘26 (5 goals/1 assist), Bebe Scourzo ’27 (4 goals), and Maggie Murphy ’26 (3 goals/1 assist).

“I’m so proud of how hard this team worked and came together as a group,” said Coach Goss. “It's hard winning back-to-back, so it’s a testament to their teamwork and resolve. The work is far from over though, we'll look to keep the momentum rolling into the State playoffs.”
