After-School Programs

MKA's Extended Day Program provides a supervised program after school for students in grades Pre-K through eight. Extended Day is open on school days until 6:00 p.m. Students have the opportunity to complete homework and participate in outdoor and indoor activities appropriate for their developmental level. Extended Day is available on a drop-in basis and is available to all MKA students. Along with the daily Extended Day activities, children may sign up for a variety of after school classes.

EXTENDED DAY CLASSES

FRENCH FOR 3RD GRADERS

Instructor: Madame Roure

Dates: Wednesdays beginning January 17 through February 28

Time: 2:20 to 2:50 PM

Capacity: Minimum 6 – Maximum 17 students

As a continuation of the French Club offered in the Fall 2017 semester, this class is for current French students in third grade who are interested in doing more writing and reading in French. Students currently registered are encouraged to continue if they have enjoyed it. However, new students currently in third grade are welcome to register if they are motivated to do more reading in French. Students will continue to act out stories and acquire new vocabulary as they continue to read the book “Les adventures d’Isabelle” by Karen Rowan and Donna Tatum-Johns.  

INTRODUCTION TO FRENCH FOR 2ND GRADERS

Students will be introduced to the French language through stories from books, told with songs, and a variety of props and gestures. Children will acquire high frequency vocabulary and structures while having fun, playing active games, and singing.

Calling all Magic Genies! This is your chance to learn the secrets of the mystical illusions of great magicians! This winter we have all new tricks to amaze your audiences. Learn how a magician predicts which of 5 coins will always land heads up, or make a bouquet of flowers suddenly change color. Astound your friends and family by making a cup move through a table using nothing but newspaper! Thrill them even more when you learn a famous street magic trick that will baffle everyone. You’ll even get to share your new skills with friends and family in a real magic show at your school!

AIRPLANES ADVENTURES FOR GRADES K-3

Get ready for an all new fun-filled semester with Hobby Quest’s Airplanes – Adventures! This winter we are going to take building and flying to the next level with amazing, high-flying adventures! Starting off with something new and exciting, we will build The Unlimited, a balsa wood helicopter powered by a rubber band that not only flies 50 feet in in the air, but also taps into your creativity and imagination by giving you different options on how to build it! Next, we’ll build the Spitfire, a super cool balsa wood plane that flies really far and is very durable! No semester is complete without an electric plane, and this time we’re going big with the Air Victor, an amazing RC helicopter that will be sure to be one you won’t forget! PLEASE NOTE: Airplanes Adventures will not be held February 16.

This class will introduce your child to many different types of art! Students will work with materials such as watercolor, markers, tempra paint, crayon, and more! A different project will be completed each week. All supplies and aprons are included.

GYMNASTICS (GRADES PreK-3) AT MKA MIDDLE SCHOOL DANCE ROOM

Gymnastics helps with overall strength and coordination, instilling higher confidence, a positive self-image, and cooperative learning skills. The program is designed to improve a young gymnast’s coordination through basic gymnastic skills. A typical class will start with proper stretching techniques to warm up the muscles, then proceed with progressions across the mat. Students will learn skills such as cartwheels, round offs, front and back walk overs, front and back handsprings, and more.

But have you ever wondered how it is that certain animals are welcomed into our homes and hearts, and others, well – not so much? Learn how to take care of the furry and feathered friends that we call our pets. We’ll study dogs, cats, fish, birds, horses, rabbits, and make some great art projects about our favorite pets!

Dinosaurs ruled the earth for millions of years. Suddenly, they disappeared. Learn all about dinosaurs as we take an adventure back in time. Find out which dinosaur was the largest, which was the smallest, which had the most horns, the longest neck, or which ate the most food. Learn which dinosaurs evolved into animals of our own time and create awesome art projects in paint, collage, and clay as we work our way through our own awesome Jurassic Park! PLEASE NOTE: Dinosaur Adventures will not be held February 19.

ELEMENTARY EGYPT FOR GRADES 1-3

Feel that desert heat as we begin an exciting adventure exploring the daily life of our ancient Egyptian ancestors. Thanks to their creativity and their genius at engineering and building we have many examples of the work they did that still survive to this day. We’ll get to experience life in the time of the pharaohs as we make Egyptian jewelry, build pyramids, make a magnificent pharaoh’s mask to dress up with, paint on papyrus scrolls and create artwork as we learn about hieroglyphics, the Rosetta Stone, Pyramids, King Tut, Cleopatra, mummification and more on this awesome trip back in time.

Embroidery is a lovely creative pastime, encouraging social interaction while giving us a break from the craziness in the world. The pieces that you stitch are unique and special works of art. Join our friendly stitching circle and become engrossed in a classic and timeless art while you learn a few stitches and create beautiful hand crafted accessories with embroidered needle art.
