After-School Programs

MKA's Extended Day Program provides a supervised program after school for students in grades Pre-K through eight. Extended Day is open on school days until 6:00 p.m. Students have the opportunity to complete homework and participate in outdoor and indoor activities appropriate for their developmental level. Extended Day is available on a drop-in basis and is available to all MKA students. Along with the daily Extended Day activities, children may sign up for a variety of after-school classes.

ARCHITECTURE & DESIGN for GRADES K-3

Instructor: ARDE Architecture & Design for kids

Dates: Tuesdays beginning April 9 – May 28

Time: 2:30 – 3:30

Capacity: Min 8 – Max 16 students

This class is for those who want to build on a grand scale. Mega tall pyramids and skyscrapers up to the ceiling (ceilingscrapers), a bridge as long as their classroom or a watchtower for their favorite superhero are among the structures students are going to erect in this class. Besides the largest team projects in the Afterschool world, young architects will work individually to build furniture, create 3D scale model of their dream house and design a street façade. Students would even produce a masterplan of a city where their friends and family could live. The graduates of the class will learn exciting terms and concepts such as classical Vitruvian principles, light & shadow, aesthetics, positive & negative space, texture, composition, visual & spatial thinking, balance, scale and much more.

LITTLE ENGINEERS for GRADES PRE-K - K

Instructor: Montclair Learning Center

Dates: Tuesdays beginning April 9 – May 28

Includes fun, engaging and hands-on activities to introduce different areas of STEM through science experiments, building robots or circuits. We incorporate stories, games and songs as well. 

GYMNASTICS for GRADES K-3

Instructor: Miss Rachelle from Diamond Gymnastics

Location: Middle School Dance Studio

Gymnastics helps with overall strength and coordination, instilling higher confidence, a positive self-image, and cooperative learning skills. The program is designed to improve a young gymnast’s coordination through basic gymnastic skills. A typical class will start with proper stretching techniques to warm up the muscles, then proceed with progressions across the mat. Students will learn skills such as cartwheels, round offs, from and back walk overs, front and back handsprings, and more.

ROLLER COASTER for GRADES 1-3

Instructor: Montclair Learning Center

Dates: Wednesdays beginning April 10 - May 29

Time: 2:30 – 3:30

Explore the thrill of building your own amusement park. Learn basic concepts of engineering and physics as you design and build a safe roller coaster and theme park rides. Identify machines and use the following concepts: momentum, force, gravity, friction, motion, gears, and pulleys. 

JUNIOR PIRATES for GRADES PRE-K - K

Ahoy matey and shiver me timbers! We’re off on a high seas adventure to learn about pirates from ages ago. We’ll navigate the ocean, fill up a treasure chest and find it with a treasure map, make a jolly roger, and more as we sail the seven seas and explore the life and times of these renegades, in a friendly and fun way for our littler learners.

Instructor: Arts and Creations Pottery Studio

Children will be introduced each class to ceramic projects, pottery, clay, mosaics, etc. Each child will be encouraged to use their imagination. All supplies are included. There will be a new project each week.

Learn chess from the best! Join former MKA student and New Jersey State Chess Champion, Grandmaster Mac Molner for a brand new chess class! Students will learn the fundamentals, how to start a game off properly, and be introduced to helpful checkmate patterns and tactics. Classes will be a mixture of lessons, mini-games, special activities, and games played for fun. Come join in on the fun and make your first moves in the royal game!

The classic art of knitting has its roots in practicality, with a wonderfully creative and artistic result. Using yarns of many types we’ll create useful products and make them into personal heirlooms. Learn how to use patterns to make some of the loveliest pieces in your collection. We’ll make a phone purse, hair accessories, pillows, and some classic items while learning the stitches and techniques to make each piece extra special. Repeat students create alternate projects.
