Learning Comes to Life for MKA's 4th and 5th Grades

10 May 2013

Earlier today, MKA's 4th and 5th grades enjoyed the culmination of many weeks of in-depth study with special activities that brought their learning to life.

The 4th grade immigration unit that introduces children to those concepts of 'push' and 'pull' that motivate the immigrant experience, concluded with fascinating presentations from a group of parents and grandparents who shared their own personal immigration stories with the children.  With experiences from countries as diverse as India, Russia, Greece and Italy, the guests discussed their reasons for having to leave a country, the factors that determined why America was their destination of choice, issues that made being an immigrant here difficult and some personal treasures that remind them of their homelands.

For the 5th grade, research into the history, culture, religion and life of the Ancient Greeks culminated with an authentic Greek Feast in the Middle School Common Room- transformed by parents into a venue worthy of the Gods.  Student representatives from the City States of Athens, Argos, Delphi and Sparta - many in costume - presented posters and facts displaying aspects of their respective homelands before giving a toast to their fellow Greeks.
