MKA’s comprehensive co-curricular offerings are an essential part of student life, extending and enriching learning beyond the classroom. Clubs and activities, many of which meet both during and after school, complement academic learning by helping students explore interests, build community, and develop essential team-building and leadership skills. With more than 50 clubs and organizations spanning politics, the arts, fine dining, journalism, and beyond, students pursue their passions in meaningful ways that enrich their MKA journey.

Middle School

The Middle School offers a variety of clubs and activities that encourage enthusiastic participation, foster friendships across the grades, and allow students to take a well-earned break from the classroom. A few of the groups offered each year include Student Government, the Chamber Singers, Student Ed-Tech Leaders (SETL), and Jazz Band.

Middle School Band

If your fourth or fifth-grade student participates in Middle School Band, there are required group sessions after school as follows:

  • Fourth grade: Percussion (Wednesday 3:00-4:00 p.m.), Woodwinds (Thursdays), Brass (Fridays)
  • Fifth grade: Woodwind (Mondays), Brass (Tuesdays), Percussion (Wednesdays 4:00 - 5:00 p.m.)

Middle School Strings

If your fourth or fifth-grade student participates in Middle School Strings, there are optional group sessions after school. The schedule will be provided at the beginning of the year.

Private Music Lessons

Private lessons on a variety of instruments are available after school at an additional cost. To learn more, please contact Dimitri Hadjipetkov.

Athletics

The mission of the Middle School athletics program at MKA is to provide opportunities for all students to be successful while working on skill development, teamwork, and sportsmanship. MKA offers seasonal sports teams for students in sixth through eighth grade.

  • FALL: soccer, field hockey, football, girls' tennis, cross country, volleyball
  • WINTER: basketball, swimming, fencing, ice hockey
  • SPRING: lacrosse, boys' tennis, baseball, softball, and track and field


Middle School sports start at 3:00 p.m. and practice ends at 4:00 p.m., with students being dismissed by 4:15 p.m. Both home and away games run later, with schedules provided at the start of the season.  To learn more, please contact MKA’s Director of Athletics Todd Smith.

Academic Teams

These popular teams help build our community and enrich our students. Spaces are limited, and interested students are urged to apply when enrollment opens. Due to scheduling conflicts, students participating in teams are not able to participate in sports during that trimester.

Model UN Team

Tuesdays and Thursdays

Model UN (MUN) is an activity that students can engage in to learn about world issues, and how cooperation between nations that might have different goals or agendas can make a better life for everyone. Model UN helps with developing crucial skills that students will use later in life, such as research and writing, public speaking, critical thinking, the ability to solve difficult problems, and, most importantly, collaboration and diplomacy.


Speech and Debate Team

Mondays and Wednesdays

Join the Speech and Debate Team and develop the invaluable skill of public speaking!  Students will learn the techniques for building and delivering a successful speech. Students will engage in delivering speeches, as well as participating in formal and informal debates.

Robotics Team

Tuesdays and Thursdays

Students work together to design, build, and program LEGO SPIKE robots to complete the challenges set forth in this year’s FIRST LEGO League season. Space is limited!

Theater/Fine & Performing Arts

MKA has a vibrant theater arts program. All students are encouraged to participate either through acting or supporting technical roles. Practices typically run after school from 3:30 p.m.

  • Grades 6: Winter play
  • Grade 7: Spring Shakespeare play
  • Grade 8: Fall play

Upper School

Upper School clubs and organizations add to the joy and balance that students achieve at MKA, enabling them to develop personal interests alongside leadership skills. In a supportive and collaborative environment, these opportunities generate school spirit, foster personal growth, and encourage responsibility for the greater community.

Architecture Club

Mission: To provide knowledge, education, experience, and skills to MKA students interested in architecture as a field of study or possible future career.

Art from the Heart

Mission: To create an artistic environment that fosters community, creativity, and self-expression while helping those in need.

Astronomy Club

Mission: To encourage community through astronomy, to spark a new scientific interest, and to share our passion for astronomy with the community.

Book Club

Mission: To read and discuss literature.

Chess Club

Mission: To facilitate a space where students can learn and play chess (and have fun).

Entrepreneurship Club

Mission:

  • To discuss and develop business ideas.
  • To learn and apply valuable entrepreneurship skills.
  • To learn firsthand from experienced entrepreneurs.
  • To present your entrepreneurial skills in competition.

Ethics Club

Mission: To focus on MKA Character Standards while reflecting on our own personal values and how we can live our lives and serve our community as leaders according to these principles. To offer a student perspective on ways that we can educate the community and encourage discussions about ethics and ethical behavior.

Finance Club

Mission: To educate the MKA community about finance through the stock market and to give students opportunities to experience a future career in the financial industry.

Future Nurses and Physicians

Mission: To inspire and empower the next generation of healthcare professionals within the MKA Upper School community. Through education, leadership, and community service, we aim to create and foster a passion for healthcare and provide opportunities for students to explore their interests in the field.

MKA TV

Mission: MKA TV broadcasts and records athletic, artistic, and academic events in order to showcase student achievement and talent to the entire MKA community.

Model UN

Mission: To cultivate global citizenship and leadership qualities in students through Model United Nations.

Philosophy Club

Mission: To foster thought and discussion about wider questions and to help make our community a more deeply thoughtful, reflective, and educated one.

STEM

Mission: To help students better understand and explore various STEM-related topics, specifically those not typically covered in our curricula, through collaborative STEM projects, competitions, outreach, and hands-on activities.

Computer Science Club

Mission: To encourage exploration of computer science, data science, and machine learning principles by our peers and to discuss challenges and current events related to computer science fields.

Asian Cultural Society

Mission: To foster a community where Asian culture and heritage are embraced while fulfilling our goals of helping the Asian community in MKA and supporting Asian service communities.

Jewish Cultural Society

Mission: To foster a community for Jews on campus by creating a safe space for discussions on religion, politics, and to celebrate cultural events with the broader student body.

EMPOWER

Mission: To foster a safer, more inclusive, and more equitable environment, as well as a culture of female empowerment among all students.

Environmental Action Club

Mission: To raise awareness about important environmental issues, instill a sense of personal responsibility in the community to protect and preserve the environment, and cultivate an appreciation for the environment.

Gender Sexuality Alliance (GSA)

Mission: To create a safe space and support system for members and allies of the LGBTQIA+ community.

SADD

Mission: SADD is a national nonprofit organization dedicated to the safety and wellness of all students.

SaFe Zone

Mission: To educate people on mental health, to work to create a safe school environment, to destigmatize mental health in our community, and to create opportunities for people to share and discuss coping mechanisms.

Junior Classical League

Mission: To encourage an interest in and an appreciation of the language, literature, and culture of ancient Greece and Rome and to impart an understanding of the debt of our own culture to that of Classical antiquity.

Linguistics

Mission: To promote the study of linguistics through participation in computational linguistics competitions and through discussion of the construction and richness of language.

Math Club

Mission: To instill a love for mathematics in our club members by learning about interesting math topics, while simultaneously preparing for math contests that will be held throughout the year.

MKA Robotics

Mission: To make robotics accessible to all who are interested in trying it, and to do the best we can in the FIRST TECH challenge.

Mock Trial

Mission: To compete in the Vincent J. Apruzzese High School Mock Trial Competition.

Science Bowl

Mission: To create a collaborative and inquisitive community by practicing answering interesting and fun science trivia questions in preparation for the National Science Bowl competition.

Speech & Debate

Mission: To promote & facilitate public speaking and debate among students within the MKA Community in preparation for competitions and public discourse.

MKA in the Community

Mission: To increase MKA’s presence and engagement within the larger community, and to coordinate our efforts in service.

Academy News

Mission: To offer objective and comprehensive coverage of school-related, current, and interesting news to the MKA community.

Expression

Mission: To produce a physical magazine with photoshoots, articles, and art pieces by students that revolve around the idea of fashion and expressing yourself, as well as a fashion show near the end of the year.

The Lattice

Mission: To celebrate and publish the academic research and writing achievements of the MKA student body.

Stylus

Mission: To nurture the literary and artistic heart of MKA.

Yearbook

Mission: To create and market the award-winning yearbook to memorialize the accomplishments, events, and emotions of the 2023-2024 school year.

Cheerleading

Mission: To bring spirit to our community, to cheer for the football team, and to participate in competitions to showcase our talents.

MKA Chamber Music Ensemble

Mission: To perform pieces of a range of difficulties to display the rich musical talent at MKA, inspire others to pick up an instrument, and accompany the other musical talent at MKA.

MKA Jazz Octet

Mission: To perform varying levels of musical pieces to show the talent of MKA students and to participate in and partner with other musicians in performances.

Arab Student Association

Mission: To provide a safe space where Middle Eastern and North African students of any religion at MKA can connect and share their culture with each other and the broader school community.

Asain Students Affinity Group

Mission: To create a greater sense of community amongst AAPI students at MKA and to foster a safe environment where we can talk about our experiences and shared aspects of identity.

Black Students Affinity Group

Mission: To make MKA a more welcoming place for black students, and to create a more robust and diverse community.

MiND

Mission: To advocate for the support and inclusion of the neurodivergent community at MKA, and to bridge the gap between neurodivergent and neurotypical students by creating a space for honest discussion and education.

Multiracial MKA

Mission: To create a safe space that fosters a community of multiracial students & faculty, validate our shared experiences and feelings, & put emphasis on MKA’s diverse community.

Spectrum

Mission: To provide a safe space for students and faculty who identify as LGBTQ+ to come and converse.

Unidos@MKA

Mission: To create a safe space for Latin American and Hispanic students to engage with their community and culture through discussion, food, games, music, and community service.

MKA Lab

Mission: To provide students with free tutoring help and allow students to teach their peers about subjects they have excelled in.

Women in STEM Mentorship Program

Mission: To create a space where women and non-binary individuals can find encouragement, a community, and resources in order to foster confidence and opportunities to pursue STEM-related passions.
