EPE OFFERINGS

Registration will open at 7:00 P.M. on Monday, March 2.

Registration will take place for all programs through our online portal, CampBrain. All charges will be billed through your MKA Blackbaud Tuition Management account. (If you have registered for STAR Camp or EPE in the past, your same credentials can be used to access EPE registration via CampBrain.)

  • After-school care is provided from the end of the school day until 6:00 p.m. each day.
  • Students will remain on their home campus: grades Jr-K to 3 at the Primary School and grades 4 & 5 at the Middle School.
  • Multiple sessions are offered daily where you can choose for your student(s) to participate in Stay and Play or an Enrichment Class
    • If you chose a class or Stay and Play for Session 2, then you must choose Stay and Play or another class for Session 1. If you do not make a selection, your student(s) will be placed in Stay and Play, and you will be charged accordingly ($15/hour).
  • Extended Student Supervision(ESS, formerly Study Hall) is available for students in  for grades 6-8. Please see details at the bottom of this webpage.
  • Enrichment Classes vary in prices. All details can be found on the schedules below.
  • Stay and Play is available Monday-Friday for students in Grades Jr-K to 5 at $15/hour per student.
  • Unscheduled drop-ins will be charged at $25/hour per student, and student(s) will be placed in Stay and Play.
  • If your child(ren) is not picked up within 10 minutes of their session ending, they will be placed in Stay and Play, and you will be charged $25/hour per student.
  • Families arriving after 6:00 p.m. will be charged $25 for every 10 minutes after 6:00 p.m.

Bitty Baseball

Learn the game of baseball/softball and brush up on your skills. Students will sharpen their catching, throwing, and hitting skills and better understand the game.

Grades 1-3 will also participate in scrimmages.

Chess Primary School - offered by GrandMaster Mac

Chess Grade K:

Come take your first steps in the royal game of chess! Students will learn the piece movements and special rules like castling, as well as practicing check and checkmate. GrandmasterMac provides a fun chess class full of different activities to ensure your child learns while also having a good time. There will be prizes and fun rewards offered during class lessons!

Chess Grades 1-3:

GrandmasterMac is hosting a chess class open to all students from 1st-3rd grade. GrandmasterMac's experienced instructors are able to help students of all skill levels! Students will look forward to a fun class full of different chess topics and will be challenged regardless of experience level. There will be prizes and fun rewards offered during class lessons!

Gymnastics

Gymnastics (Grades 1-3):
Returning and new students can join Coach Rachelle for gymnastics classes. Classes include trampoline, beam, and mat skills. Students are taught forward and back rolls, cartwheels, round offs, and handstands. As each student advances, they are spotted at their level and move on to more advanced skills that include front and back walkovers, front and back handsprings, flips, etc. It’s a very high energy, fun class for boys and girls that the kids really enjoy.

Gymnastics (Jr.K & K):
Join Coach Rachelle  for classes that consist of stretching, mat activities, trampoline, and beam. Students are taught forward and back rolls, cartwheels, and handstands. As the students progress, they move on to more advanced skills that include front and back walkovers, front and back handsprings, flips, etc. It’s a fun, high energy class that the students will really enjoy!

Zen Hour for 1st Graders
Offered by Anne-Sophie Roure (in English)

This class offers 1st graders a wonderful opportunity to engage in a variety of activities centered around meditation, relaxation, simple yoga poses, breath work, gratitude practice,storytelling and more. Each session is designed to gently guide children to discover who they are, nurture their imagination and creativity, and help them feel calmer and more relaxed.

MKA Magazine

Calling all journalists! Any first, second, or third grade authors who love to write stories, conduct interviews, and report on the latest news are invited to be part of the Brookside Magazine! RoboCoding
Discover a real-world introduction to coding and robotics!
RoboCoding gives students a hands-on introduction to the fundamentals of both coding and robotics by challenging them to build and execute programs with real robots. Collaborating on coding activities reinforces life skills like teamwork and problem-solving, and completing challenges leaves students feeling confident and proud.

Culinary Passport

Our young chefs will embark on a delicious journey around the world! We 'll whip up recipes from their favorite books and TV shows, such as Harry Potter and SpongeBob Squarepants. We 'll travel to Italy for a hilarious funny-face pizza party, head to Japan to learn the art of sushi-making, then to New York to bake NYstyle individual cheesecakes. From mixing and measuring to decorating and tasting, our classes are designed to spark creativity, build confidence, and foster teamwork and curiosity.

3D Pens Printing Lab

This class allows students to create 3D art and projects and to develop productive visual and art skills. Whether you have used a 3D pen before or not, an experienced teacher will be there to guide students in any capacity they need. A 3D pen is a unique form of printing as it is directly controlled by the user. Doodle to your heart's desire and explore making your own two or three-dimensional art pieces.

Jungle Vibes Art Class
You are invited to join us for an ART Adventure as we go deep into the jungles and rainforests of Africa and the Amazon.  We will explore animal habitats to find animals that roam free in the wild, search the Amazon floor for rare insects and reptiles and explore the beauty of the colorful plant life we find there. Grab your imagination and get ready to build. design  and paint our discoveries from deep in the mysterious jungles of our planet.

Sewing - Offered by The Eclectic Chic Boutique, Montclair 

Stitch your way to creativity! Kids will learn age-appropriate sewing techniques and create fun projects based on their interests and skill levels. Kids will also explore upcycling and

the importance of reducing waste while creating their fabric creations. We'll explore a world of wonder with themed projects, from funky felt plushies to colorful tote bags. Kids

Cheer! 
Goooo Cougars!! Get ready to jump, shout, and shine in our high-energy cheer class! Students will be introduced to the exciting world of cheerleading in a fun, positive, and confidence-building environment! The children will learn all the cheer essentials including sharp motions, powerful jumps, basic stunts, uplifting chants, spirited choreography, and strong teamwork skills.

Throughout the classes, our cheerleaders-in-training will work together toward an exciting end-of-season performance to showcase their new skills! The pricing includes their very own team t-shirt, pompoms, and bows too.

Children will begin to explore the world of robotics as they build moving animals that teach the fundamentals of robotic design. Show Choir

Whether your child is a natural-born performer or a little shy and looking to find their voice, this class offers a supportive and "jazz-hands friendly" environment for everyone.  Join Mrs. McMenimen for sessions that are structured to keep students engaged and moving. 
Every class includes:

  • Vocal Warm-Ups: Learning how to use our voices safely while exploring melody and rhythm.
  • Theatre Games: Fun acting exercises that build focus, improvisation skills, and stage presence.
  • Rehearsal: We will spend the final portion of each class practicing a special musical number that blends singing and light choreography.

The Grand Finale

After our 8-week journey, the students will showcase their hard work! We will host a short performance for family and friends to celebrate everything they’ve learned.

Foundational Engineering
Does your child love to tinker and create new things, or are they the kind of learner who likes to break things apart to see what’s inside? If so, they’re going to love Snapology’s Foundational Engineering: Machines and Contraptions program! This program gives your student the tools they need to understand mechanical movement and the importance of simple machines. They will see these moving parts up-close as they follow instructions to build various machines and contraptions, then use the models to develop new design ideas, test out physics concepts, and even play games with their partners and classmates! Whether they are the creative-constructive type or prefer the inquisitive-deductive way of learning, this program is sure to spark their engineering interests!

Earth Explorers: Art, Soil and Stories

Where Imagination Meets the Great Outdoors!

Join Ms. DeTrolio this spring for a hands-on journey through the wonders of the outdoors. In Earth Explorers, our youngest environmentalists will transform "trash into treasure" using recycled materials and find beauty in the natural world—from the seeds we plant to the sticks we find.

Each week features a themed adventure:

  • Read: We start with a captivating story about nature and sustainability.
  • Grow: We’ll get our hands dirty planting seasonal flowers and veggies.
  • Create: Using clay, recycled cardboard, and natural dyes, we’ll build eco-masterpieces.
  • Explore: We’ll head outside to observe the changing season and learn how to be kind to our planet.

Pickleball
Pickleball enthusiast and coach, Mrs. Berra is ready to serve up some fun! This clinic is the perfect way to learn fundamental racquet skills, good sportsmanship and scorekeeping through easy-to-follow instruction and games. Serve, dink, lob and smash your way to better hand-eye coordination while having fun and laughing with friends. Understand what’s “IN” and “OUT” by making line calls, just like a real umpire! There is a reason pickleball is the fastest growing, most popular game in the country…It’s easy to learn, social and fun! Kids will enjoy every minute on the court. Advanced Gymnastics

Coach Rachelle has added an Intermediate/Advance Gymnastic class for all of our gymnastic enthusiasts! This class will focus on front and back walkovers, aerials, front and back tucks, back handsprings, valdez and progress from there.

Each student will be taught and advanced at their own level.

Kid Power Gymnastics

A great opportunity to make new friends! Students in grades 1-3 will learn how to teach the Pre-K and kindergarten students different gymnastic moves. Imagine Jazz Dance

Get ready to groove! Join us for a fun, high-energy jazz dance class where young dancers will explore the exciting world of jazz through rhythm, creative movement, and expressive dance. Students will learn foundational jazz steps like kicks, leaps, turns, and isolations—all while building coordination, strength, flexibility, and balance. The class will also include improvisation, across-the-floor progressions, and choreography combinations, helping dancers develop their technique and style. The session culminates in a final performance where family and friends can enjoy the students' hard work and creativity. No previous dance experience required—just bring your energy and get ready for all that jazz!

Join Bloom Performing Arts in this musical movement class for little creatives! Through exploratory movement, dance, song, and storytelling, children can enjoy a rich arts-based learning experience. This class gives third graders a chance to explore essential life tools as they prepare for the transition to middle school. Flight & Aerodynamics - Little Pilots
Go on an aviation adventure into STEAM!
Nexplore’s Flight & Aerodynamics – Little Pilots course combines hands-on STEAM activities with the joys of flight. In each lesson, students will play games and overcome engineering challenges that develop their teamwork and problem-solving abilities. Calling all inventors and innovators!
This exciting engineering program inspires students to pursue futures in science and technology. While working with Maker Kits, students build mechanical, artistic, and engineering skills and learn to act as inventors in their own right. They design remote-controlled hydraulic arms, learn to harness energy to power race cars, and experiment with structural design. Students keep their inventions and proudly share their projects with family and friends.

Stay and Play - Are you looking for an after school playdate with friends? Then take advantage of “Stay and Play.” Stay and play offers students the opportunity to interact in a safe and fun environment. Students will enjoy the beautiful weather outside playing with friends on the field/playground. During inclement weather, students will have fun with their friends inside with board games, blocks, legos, etc.

Homework Help - (students in grades 1-3)

Get a jump start on homework after school! A teacher will supervise and help get homework assignments completed. Independent study skills and organizational skills will also be reinforced. Quiet reading time and puzzles will also be offered for enrichment when homework and studying is complete.

Swag Studio: Spring and Summer Edition
In Mr. Lutz’s Swag Studio: Spring and Summer Edit, students jump into a bright, energetic creative space where art, color, and sunny-season style take center stage! Inspired by fresh beginnings, warm weather, and all things playful and expressive, young designers will learn how to create professional-quality merch featuring their own artwork and favorite spring and summer themes. Throughout this hands-on workshop, students will explore both digital and hand-drawn design techniques, transforming their ideas into real products like custom-printed vacation luggage tags, water bottles, bucket hats and tote bags for the beach, summer tees, garden stakes, garden flags, flower pots, and more! Each week, makers will dive into a new project, building confidence as they design items inspired by spring blooms, bold colors, outdoor adventures, sunshine, friendship, and joyful self-expression. By the end of every class, students head home with a brand-new custom creation — perfect for everyday use, sharing with friends, or celebrating the season. Challenge Lab

In this high-energy class, students compete in creative physical and mental challenges designed to test strategy, quick thinking, focus and teamwork. Each week features 3-4 exciting mini-challenges—from obstacle courses to brain teasers—that encourage problem-solving, perseverance and positive collaboration. Points accumulate throughout the semester, building toward an exciting finale where we celebrate all participants and crown our season champion. With plenty of laughs, students build confidence while learning that patience and persistence lead to success.

Imagine Musical Theater

3, 2, 1, Action! Join Bloom Performing Arts for an advanced musical theatre performance class designed for young artists ready to shine. Students will dive into singing, movement, and character development in this exciting scene-into-song course. Through theatrical dramatizations and song interpretations, they will build their skills and confidence, culminating in a final musical showcase for family and friends. By the end of the semester, students will have strengthened their performance abilities, awakened their creativity, developed their unique artistic voices, and be ready to take on the middle school musical. STEM+ Design, Build, and Explore

This club will help build a stronger scientific community for our students by engaging them in various STEM challenges. Following the engineering design process, students will learn to design and build to explore various science topics.

Through interactive coding activities using robots, students will develop critical thinking and tech skills in a fun, collaborative environment.

Short science documentaries will be used as a resource to inspire engaging discussions, followed by trivia and other activities to foster the students' curiosity on topics beyond the classroom curriculum.

Creative Collage Creations 

In this imaginative course kids will discover the art of collage! Derived from the French word "coller," meaning "to glue," collage is the process of assembling different materials to create a cohesive piece of art. Students will learn how to combine items like paper, fabric, magazine cutouts, found objects, and even photos of themselves to make unique artworks. They’ll explore key artistic concepts such as color, texture, and composition, while developing their own creative style. Chess Masters

Join former MKA student and chess Grandmaster Mac Molner for a fun new session of chess. Classmates will learn common checkmate patterns, basic tactics like pins and double attacks, and the rules of tournament chess. Students will get to try out fun new types of chess like atomic chess, ghost chess, and bughouse.

Mix storytelling and audio design in podcasting!
Nexplore Podcasting empowers students to discover their voice and share what’s exciting to them. In this course, an experienced instructor guides them through the fundamentals that define the podcasting medium like using audio equipment, podcast types, and how different sounds affect the listener. Then, they’ll plan, record, edit, and publish their own podcast with its own structure and theme. Students walk away with stronger communication and technological skills plus a fantastic podcast that shows off their style and abilities.

ESS AT MIDDLE SCHOOL (GRADES 6-8)

It’s time to register for the Spring (3rd trimester) Session of ESS! This trimester, registration will take place through Camp Brain. Use the link below to create an account to register. If you have already used Camp Brain for EPE or for STAR Camp, you can use the same account information.

The Spring Session of ESS will run from Monday, March 30rd through Thursday, June 4th.

The deadline to register for ESS Spring Session is Monday, March 9th.

If your child is not registered for the winter session, you will be charged the $25 drop in fee on the days your child attends.

Extended Student Supervision (ESS)

Extended Student Supervision (ESS) is available Monday-Friday, from 3:00 - 6:00 p.m., for students in Grades 6-8.

Registration for the Spring Session of ESS will open on Monday, March 2. 

The cost is as follows:

  • If your child is picked up between:
    • 3:00 - 5:00 p.m.: $225.00 per trimester (ESS pickup begins at 3:30 p.m. to avoid conflict with the Middle School carline.)
    • 5:00 - 6:00 p.m.: $425.00 per trimester
  • Drop-in Rate: $25 per hour
  • Late Charge for Pickup After 6:00 p.m.: $25.00 per quarter hour

Please note: The number of days that your child attends ESS each week has no impact on the trimester cost. 

The registration fee is waived for families receiving financial aid, but registration is still required. All charges will be billed through your MKA Blackbaud Tuition Management account.

READ BIOS

Director of Extended Play and Enrichment Program, Co-Director of Star Camp

Amy has joinied the MKA community after 30 years of teaching in the West Orange Public Schools and is excited to begin a new chapter as the Director of the Extended Play and Enrichment (EPE) program. Although she will miss her role as a classroom teacher, she also loves her position as the director of MKA’s own STAR Camp for close to 20 years. Amy plans to bring her camp expertise to planning a robust EPE program that allows our students opportunities to extend their social and academic skills beyond the normal school hours.

Amy graduated from Muhlenberg College and earned her masters degree in elementary education. She has presented several times at the Educator Collaborative Global Conferences, NJECC, and the Annual Statewide Educational Conference at Montclair State University in 2019. She won the Governor’s Teacher of the Year award for her school in 2020.

Amy has been married to Primary School teacher and baseball coach Ralph Pacifico for 30 years and has three daughters, Paige, Emma, and Geena, who are all MKA graduates. In her free time, Amy enjoys reading and traveling.

Assistant Director of Extended Play and Enrichment

Amy began her career in education as a 4th grade teacher in Livingston, NJ, where she discovered the immense joy of guiding and supporting young learners. A graduate of Montclair State University with both a Bachelor’s and Master’s degree in education, she has spent many years working with children in a variety of roles—all rooted in her passion to create environments where kids feel seen, supported, and inspired.

After several rewarding years in the classroom, Amy followed her entrepreneurial spirit and launched a home organizing business, helping individuals and families create systems that brought clarity to their lives.

Now, as Assistant Director of the Extended Play and Enrichment Program at MKA, Amy is excited to support students, families, and staff as she begins this new chapter in a caring school community.

Outside of work, Amy enjoys hiking, traveling with her husband, singing in her church choir, and spending time with her family and friends!
