300 MKA Students Help the Community

07 October 2010

Wednesday, October 6 saw over 300 students from The Montclair Kimberley Academy Upper School deployed across thirty organizations in northern New Jersey for a morning of community service.

Members of the freshman, sophomore and senior classes, together with their teachers (juniors remained behind to take MKA's intensive Writing Challenge assessment) divided into the four Houses of the Upper School rather than by grade, and volunteered at nursery schools and senior centers, at programs for the disabled and area parks and gardens, and at thrift shops and animal shelters.

The morning not only provided the MKA community with an opportunity to put the service learning strand of their curriculum into practice, but also provided ample time for reflection as students returned to campus to discuss their experiences in grade-level advisor groups.

"We wanted to bring the entire community together to share a service experience." Said Dean of Student Life Dominique Gerard, "Sending students and faculty out by houses allowed them to be mixed by grade level and work with other members of the campus that they may not see often or even know. So while we built bridges with the greater New Jersey community, we also built some within our own. The organizations appreciated our work so much, and I think our students got a lot out of it too."
