Building Bridges Through Diversity and Collaboration at Third Annual We’re Better Together Conference
Thirty students from the Student Diversity Leadership Committee (SDLC) represented Montclair Kimberley Academy at the third annual We’re Better Together conference on October 22. MKA partnered with The Pingry School and The Hun School of Princeton to host the conference which was held at the Pingry School’s Pottersville campus. This impactful event was designed to deepen students’ understanding of diversity, equity, inclusion, and antiracism while fostering relationships with peers from neighboring schools.
This year marked new beginnings with the introduction of a keynote speaker, Soul Steps, an artist-in-residence at Pingry. Students learned about the dance tradition, its origin, and the ways it is used as a means of unity and self-expression. Workshops followed, with a session led by MKA’s own Upper School Academic Dean Jason Park, and Middle School Dean of Community Life Shanie Israel on identity and intersectionality. Pingry’s presenters led additional sessions on DEI-related themes.

Students shared their thoughts on the most impactful aspects of the conference and how it shaped their perspectives on diversity and collaboration. Juliana Villifana ’25 said, “The intersectionality part was the most engaging part of the conference for me as I was able to engage with someone who shares my similar background and we had many of the same intersectionality circles.” Further, Jemma Potenza ’25 noted, “The most impactful part of the conference was the discussion on controversial topics and how to approach a conversation about them. Being a leader of SDLC, a lot of controversial and sensitive topics arise, so knowing how to approach them respectively, but still having a productive conversation, is essential.”
Since its founding, the We’re Better Together Conference has provided an invaluable opportunity for SDLC members to build skills that extend well beyond the classroom. Assistant Head of School for Diversity, Inclusion, and Antiracism Paris McLean explained, “The conference serves as professional development for our young people. Students leave affirmed, equipped, more whole, and ready to navigate life. They know how to listen, be empathetic, and share a point of view that’s different from someone else’s.”

The conference also provided a meaningful platform for SDLC members to reflect on their roles as leaders within the MKA community. Chelsea Lee ’26 shared, “Self-reflection and discovery is always the first step in DEI work. At these conferences, I am able to step out of my comfort zone and be less fearful of judgment. A few years ago, I could never have imagined myself being a part of the step dance, talking in front of a huge group, or participating in the celebration circle, but through SDLC, I've grown and put myself more out there.”
Opportunities like the We’re Better Together Conference have a profound impact on students’ personal growth, offering a space to develop their ethical leadership skills, connect with peers from diverse backgrounds, and learn to lead confidently within the MKA community and beyond.
Thank you to our partners and The Pingry School for hosting the conference!
