Message concerning Swine Influenza

28 April 2009

As you know, reports of cases of influenza-like illness, now called Swine Influenza, are increasing. The Center for Disease Control states the symptoms are similar to regular flu and include fever, cough, sore throat, body aches, loss of appetite, headache, chills and fatigue.  Some people have also reported diarrhea and vomiting. The CDC has determined this virus is contagious and spreads from human to human, but at this time it is not known how easily.  There is no vaccine available to protect against swine flu and the best protection continues to be practice of good hygiene. Please tell your children to wash their hands often!  If your children exhibit any of the symptoms listed above, contact your pediatrician and do not send them to school. It is imperative that you notify Health Services with any confirmed case.

At MKA, the school cleaning crews will continue to wash the areas, including sinks, handrails and doorknobs with anti-viral cleaners. Be assured that we are staying in contact with the appropriate agencies, are following their directives and will monitor the situation carefully.

If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact your campus nurse or the state toll-free hotline number, open 24 hours a day at: 1-866-321-9571.
