MKA Brookside Students Lend a Hand to the Montclair Human Needs Food Pantry

Third graders and their Pre-K and Kindergarten buddies traveled to Alstede Farms in Chester to pick produce, which was then donated to the Montclair Human Needs Food Pantry. In preparation for this trip, students discussed how food is grown, and each set of buddy classes planted or will plant garlic bulbs in the Primary School garden. In science, third grade students taught their younger buddies about plant bulbs. Children learned that food can come from different structures of a plant, like the stem or the root, and that a bulb is not a seed. Third graders created a mini-presentation with pictures and oral recordings using the iPad app Explain Everything, which happens to have been created by MKA's own Reshan Richards, Director of Educational Technology. The farm trip was a lot of fun, but, most importantly, the students collected many pounds of green beans, yellow beans, tomatoes and about 200 ears of corn that will feed local families.
