MKA Latin Students Place at Annual State Convention
Last weekend, five Upper School student members of the MKA chapter of the JCL (Junior Classical League) traveled to Gateway Regional High School for the annual state convention to compete in a variety of academic, artistic, and athletic events. JCL is an international organization for middle and high school students studying Greek and Latin which boasts over 50,000 members across some 1200 chapters.
All five - juniors Elliot Furbert, Tanner Gill, Jake Kleinbaum and Michael Melitz and sophomore Benjamin Wallach - achieved success. Elliot placed 3rd in the Upper Level Latin Oratory contest and 3rd in the 400-meter Olympika race; Tanner placed 3rd in the Upper Level Cartoon Caption contest; Jake placed 1st in the Upper Level Latin Oratory contest and 1st in the Upper Level Latin Sight Reading contest; Michael placed 2nd on the Latin 1 History test and 2nd on the Latin 1 Daily Life test, and Benjamin placed 2nd in the Upper Level Latin Oratory contest. In addition, Elliot and Benjamin tied for 3rd place on the Upper Level Latin Grammar test, while Jake and Benjamin together won 1st place in the Dramatic Interpretation contest.
MKA Latin teacher Dr. John Jacobs notes: "All in all, it was a very fun and a very successful day for the MKA JCL - vivit vivetque lingua Latina!"
