MKA Presents "Girls in the Front: 15 Years of Punk Rock and Community"
On Wednesday, January 25 at 7:00 p.m., MKA presents "Girls in the Front: 15 Years of Punk Rock and Community" a unique Hemmeter History Lecture that will explore the legacy of female activism in Punk Rock with a dialogue between music critic, poet, musician and author Sara Marcus and musician and freelance writer Amy Klein '03.
Sara Marcus received an MFA in creative writing from Columbia University and was a Fellow at the MacDowell Colony in 2008 and 2009. She has written about music, books and politics for numerous publications, including The Nation, Bookforum, Artforum, the Los Angeles Review of Books, Slate, and Salon, and is also a published poet. Her book Girls to the Front: The True Story of the Riot Grrrl Revolution was published in 2010 and was described by Vanity Fair as "a historical rockument of the revolutionary 90s counterculture Riot Grrrl movement, which birthed the DIY feminist punk scene." Marcus is a founding editor of New Herring Press.
After graduating from MKA in 2003, Amy Klein studied English and Creative Writing at Harvard, then moved to Tokyo to study rock and roll and feminism in Japan. In 2010, while playing guitar in the punk band Titus Andronicus, she began posting her tour diary entries online. Her writing about feminism and music soon attracted nearly 10,000 registered followers. After reading Sara Marcus' book Girls to the Front, Amy was inspired to use her blog to create a community that could exist in the real world, not only on the internet and started Permanent Wave, an organization that encourages women, girls, and their allies to participate in art and activism.
This event, which is open to the public (ages 14 and above) and free of charge, will take place in the MKA Upper School Library, 6 Lloyd Road, Montclair. Following the discussion, Ms. Marcus's book will be available for sale. For more information or questions, contact David Hessler at dhessler@mka.org
