MKA Recognizes Community Scholars

01 October 2013

On Tuesday, September 24, seven Community Scholars were recognized at a special reception and dinner held at the Penick Center Dining Room in MKA’s Middle School. The Community Scholars, together with their parents, Headmaster Tom Nammack and his wife, faculty advisors, admissions representatives, members of the MKA Board of Trustees and friends of the school attended the event, where the students were celebrated for the accomplishments and talents – both academic and personal - that they bring to the MKA community.

Montclair Mayor Robert Jackson, Montclair Academy class of 1973 and the first Community Scholar to graduate from the school, said a few words to the Scholars and guests. He urged them to make the most of all the opportunities available to them and to give back to the school and the communities in which they have been raised. Jackson, who received both a B.A. and an M.A. from Princeton University, and an M.B.A. from Harvard University, was the youngest person ever elected to Montclair’s Township Council in 1984.

Each year, seven students with demonstrated financial need in grades 7-12 are selected for this prestigious Scholarship that is renewable annually. Established in 1969, MKA’s Community Scholars have matriculated to the county’s most prestigious universities and serve with distinction in a broad variety of careers.
