MKA Senior a Finalist in the Morehead-Cain Scholars Competition
The Montclair Kimberley Academy announces the selection of senior Laura Polding as a finalist in the 2010 Morehead-Cain Scholars competition at the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill.
Nearly 2,000 high school seniors were nominated for the Morehead, the oldest and most distinguished college scholarship in the United States. Candidates came from the state of North Carolina, 421 high schools throughout the United States (including eight from New Jersey), all secondary schools in the United Kingdom, and seventeen international institutions in Europe, Africa, Asia, and the Middle East. Seven percent of this elite pool, 125 students, has been invited to final campus interviews in late February.
Morehead-Cain Scholars receive a foundation scholarship valued at over $140,000 to cover all expenses associated with their four years of higher education at UNC. As part of the Morehead-Cain Foundation’s leadership program, all Scholars must also complete four consecutive summer programs in outdoor leadership, public service, international research, and private enterprise.
Polding, a varsity tennis player and fencer, has been elected a Faculty Scholar each of her three years at MKA’s Upper School. She was also awarded the school’s MacVicar Prize for “outstanding personal character, leadership, and citizenship.” She has studied applied science and technology at the University of Pennsylvania and commuted to Columbia University’s weekend Science Honors Program. In 2009, she was selected to participate in the New Jersey Governor’s School in the Sciences.
