MKA Senior Publishes Original Latin Poetry

01 October 2014

MKA congratulates senior Benjamin Wallach, who recently had original Latin poetry published in the online periodical VATES. The piece, entitled Marmor ("Marble"), is written in a verse form known as the quincouplet, in which the first line of the couplet contains two words and the second line, three words. As Benjamin writes in his preface, the piece uses the image of a marble statue "to present a literary situation which muddies the waters of our crisp living/non-living binary--all in just five words."

Founded in 2010, VATES: The Journal of New Latin Poetry, according to its editor, "aims to bring contemporary Latin poetry to the attention of an English-speaking audience. The purpose of the journal is to promote both the reading and the writing of new Latin verse in an attempt to reverse the decline of Latin poetry composition in the English-speaking world."
