MKA Senior Receives Nation's Most Prestigious Scholarship
MKA congratulates senior Elliot Furbert on his selection as a Morehead-Cain Scholar by the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. This is the oldest, most prestigious merit scholarship program in the United States and Elliot is MKA's first-ever recipient.
Elliot will join an elite group of approximately 50 students, only half of who are drawn from states and countries outside North Carolina, who are selected on the basis of merit and accomplishment, not financial need. Qualities looked for are leadership, academic achievement, moral force of character and physical vigor. An MKA Avery Barras Distinguished Scholar and Faculty Scholar for the past three years, Elliot was a National Achievement Semi-Finalist and one of only 39 students selected to the NJ Scholars program. In addition to his academic accolades, he is Chair of MKA’s junior Classics League, a member ofMKA’s spring and winter Track teams, plays the tenor saxophone in the Jazz Ensemble and is Vice-President of MKA’s Habitat for Humanity chapter.
Students who make it to the Finalist round are then invited to visit UNC for a series of interviews with panelists drawn from Morehead-Cain trustees, officers and alumni to determine the final selection of Scholars.
In addition to covering all expenses for four years of undergraduate study at UNC, the Morehead-Cain features a distinctive program of summer enrichment experiences. Over four summers, scholars have the opportunity to complete an outdoor leadership course, carry out public service in the United States or abroad, conduct research at sites across the world and gain experience in private enterprise.
