25 February 2013

Congratulations to five MKA Upper School students who recently met with success in the writing section of the 2013 Scholastic Art & Writing Awards competition.

Freshman Clay Walls-Tarver received an Honorable Mention in the Poetry category, as did juniors John Higgins, Kelsey O'Connor and Molly Peek.  Peek received two Honorable Mentions for two poetry submissions, while O'Connor received a prestigious Silver Key Award for a piece of Flash Fiction, as well as the Honorable Mention for Poetry.  In addition, senior Zoe Ferguson, who had received a Gold Key award last year, received an Honorable Mention for her Writing Portfolio.

Founded in 1923, The Scholastic Art & Writing Awards, sponsored by the Alliance for Young Artists and Writers, is the oldest, longest running and most eminent recognition program for creative teenagers in grades 7-12 in the United States.  Former winners include Truman Capote, Sylvia Plath and Joyce Carol Oates. Eighty-one regional affiliates review more than 140,000 submissions of art and writing from students across the country using the criteria of originality, technical skill and the emergence of a personal vision or voice.
