MKA Students to Perform Svec Play in NYC

04 May 2009

Some Montclair Kimberley Academy students will get a taste of professional theatre as they perform in A Play on Words in New York.  Written and directed by Upper School faculty member J.C. Svec, A Play on Words is being presented by Tribe Productions as part of the world premiere of the Planet Connections Theatre Festivity.  The Festivity will take place June 11th through the 28th at The White Box at 440 Studios, 440 Lafayette St, between Astor Place and East 4th St.

A Play on Words depicts strangers, strained relationships and unique circumstances that force people to communicate in three absurd one-act comedies.  A bunny, stuffed in a duffle bag, confuses two individuals in The Guy.  Four obnoxious individuals explore the ABCs of standing in The Line.  And The Body is just one big cliché.

The production features an ensemble cast that includes current MKA students sophomore Sarah Cuneo, junior Rob Gelberg and freshman Edward Rosini, and Gabby Walsh, a member of the MKA class of 2008.   The cast also features MKA dance and drama teacher Nicole Cicchella and Sarah Lopez.  MKA junior Sheridan Watson is the Stage Manager and classmate Paloma Colon is the Production Stage Manager.

A member of The Dramatists Guild of America, Svec’s work has been honored with over sixty national awards, including twelve Telly Awards.  The script for his recent short-form video All That We Know received a 2008 Videographer Award for Creativity/Writing and a 2008 AVA Award for Writing. Most recently, YouCouldn’t Pay Me Enough, a short video made with MKA students for the 2008 Encore Weekend, was honored with a Bronze REMI in the Entertainment/Film & Video Category at the 2009 Worldfest in Houston.   Svec’s previous New York stagings include The Ancient Mariner, The Bedsitter, Portraits, Meetings in a Wooded Area, HAPPY HOLIDAY$ and Information, PLEASE!

Planet Connection Theatre Festivity is committed to producing high-quality theatre, with non-traditional casting, unique perspectives, political theatre and more!  All of the productions are curated and created with the hope of inspiring cultural education and human understanding.
