MKA Welcomes Chilean Exchange Students

30 January 2012

Five Chilean high school students from the Instituto Abdón Cifuentes school in San Felipe, together with their English teacher Bernardita Sepúlveda, arrived in New Jersey last night to spend the next six weeks attending the MKA Upper School.

This is the third year that MKA has hosted this exchange; and the visitors (who are hosted by MKA families throughout their stay) are given the opportunity to learn about an American school and American culture, while immersing themselves in the English language. The Chilean students will attend classes alongside MKA students and will be encouraged to participate in after-school activities, while their teacher will spend the six weeks engaged in professional development at the MKA Primary School.

Last summer saw the first true "exchange" component to this program instituted when an MKA junior spent six weeks at Instituto Abdón Cifuentes. This summer, more MKA Spanish students will have the opportunity to travel to Chile to visit the exchange students in their home country and benefit from experiencing another culture first-hand. Interested families should plan to attend an informational meeting at the Upper School on February 15th at 7:00 p.m. For more information, contact Tracy Kuser at tkuser@mka.org.
