MKA's Chinese Program Meets with Success

20 April 2015

For the fourth time in four years, an MKA student was not only invited to participate in the annual Chinese Bridge US High School Speech Contest, but also received a prize.

Congratulations go to sophomore Jayson Thompson, a student in MKA's Chinese 3 Honors class, who won third place in the tenth annual contest, held on April 12, 2015 at the University of Massachusetts in Boston.

The contest attracted more than 10,000 students from more than 130 schools nationwide. Participants choose a topic, write an essay in Chinese, then recite and record it. If they get into the final round, they are invited to speak before eight judges and an audience of over 100, and must answer questions in Chinese. This year Jayson, in his fourth year of learning Chinese, participated in the intermediate level contest and he had an outstanding performance in the speech and Q & A part.

MKA Chinese teacher Dr. River He notes, "Jayson did a really good job as a Chinese 3H student. He is remarkable in both ability and attitude, and this is a tremendous accomplishment for him personally and exciting news for the school's Chinese program."

Congratulations also go to the MKA Upper School Chinese team of Payson Ruhl, Joe Sierotko, Isaiah Kramer, Samantha Pai, and team leader Dr. River He on their second place award in the 9th Annual Chinese Cultural Project Contest this past Saturday.

The team traveled to Rutgers University to present their project, which included a three-scene skit, dance and song, and a research presentation. There were 22 teams from different high schools all over New Jersey. MKA placed second in the final round. MKA Chinese teachers, Dr. Jeanne Tsai and Ms. Fangzhou Zhang, went to support our students at the contest as well. This is a tremendous success and honor for the MKA Chinese program!
