MKA's Furbert Named as Finalist in Country's Most Prestigious Undergraduate Competition

11 December 2013

Montclair Kimberley Academy is proud to announce the selection of senior Elliot Furbert as a finalist in the 2014 Morehead-Cain Scholars competition at the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill, the oldest and most prestigious college scholarship in the United States.  He is only the second MKA student to have ever received this honor.

The Morehead-Cain is the most competitive scholarship in undergraduate education; only 1,200 high school seniors from around the world were nominated and less than ten percent of this elite pool have been invited to campus interviews as finalists.

Morehead-Cain Scholars receive a foundation scholarship valued at over $140,000 to cover all expenses associated with their four years of higher education at UNC.  As part of the Morehead-Cain Foundation’s leadership program, all Scholars must also complete four consecutive summer programs in outdoor leadership, public service, international research, and private enterprise.

Furbert has the remarkable distinction of having been both an Avery Barras Distinguished Scholar and a Faculty Scholar for each of his three years at MKA’s Upper School. He received Summa Cum Laude honors on the National Latin Exam, is a National Achievement Scholarship Program Semi-Finalist and was selected to participate in the New Jersey Scholar's Program at Lawrenceville School this past summer. In addition to his academic accolades, Furbert is President of the Junior Classics League Chapter at MKA, is a member of the MKA Jazz and Concert Bands, is Captain of the Track and Field Team and an active member of Habitat for Humanity.
