MKA's Inaugural 8th Grade 5k a Huge Success!

19 May 2014

Sunday, May 18 saw MKA’s first-ever 5k Run/Walk and Kid’s Dash, spearheaded and organized by 8thGrade.

In addition to tutoring students at Roseville School in Newark, 8th graders have spent the past year studying the correlation between poverty and education, and were anxious to support a cause that was not only in line with their studies and activities, but also resonated with their own experiences. After much brainstorming, the students decided on holding a 5k event as their capstone community service project, and elected to support The Boys' and Girls' Club of Newark/Frost Valley Partnership that sends children from Newark to camp at Frost Valley free of charge.

The event was a huge success! Approximately 275 members of the MKA community – evenly split between students and adults - came out to Brookdale Park, with 120 of them running, some walking and MKA’s littlest Cougars participating in a Kids' Dash. Through registration fees and other support, the event raised an incredible $10,000 that will enable six children to attend camp, tuition-free.

Congratulations to the entire 8th Grade and to all the participants – and start training for next year’s event now!
