MKA's New Middle School Dining Hall Gets off to a "Green" Start Thanks to the Sustainability Committee
Sustainability is one of the focuses for the entire MKA community this year, and MKA’s Sustainability Committee has taken the lead on promoting the use of more sustainable products throughout the campuses, and in particular in the school's dining areas. In the newly renovated Middle School Dining Hall, Sustainability Committee Co-Chair and science teacher Laura Zimmerman announced the new initiative at the start of the school year. “The new Middle School dining hall has been set up to support the use of reusable plates, cups, and silverware. Carts and recycling bins have been setup around the cafeteria to support responsible disposal of these materials. In addition, students were instructed in how to use the new materials during the opening days of school and will be given reminders throughout the year.” With the proper resources at their disposal, MKA Middle School students are off to a "green" start.
All of the efforts on behalf of the Sustainability Committee serve one common goal as expressed by Zimmerman. “As a committee, we encourage students at MKA to be aware of their impact on a local and global scale and to make informed decisions in their daily live. We are fostering this through curriculum development, suggesting the purchase of more sustainable products for our school and reaching out to students during assemblies and hopefully through service opportunities in the future.”
