MKA's Ruth Miller Sees Original Play Make Finals

01 May 2012

Congratulations to MKA Middle School English teacher Ruth Miller, whose original short play Shakesperean Women's Sparknotes Holding Pen, directed by MKA Middle School Theatre Arts teacher Christian Ely, was voted on to the finals of the 18th annual NYC 15 Minute Play Festival held at the American Globe Theatre this past weekend.

The play, about a middle school girl (played by MKA eighth grader Abby South – the lone novice in an otherwise professional cast) writing a paper on Shakespeare, is a comedic look at superficial attempts to categorize Shakespeare’s heroines.

Each year, the New York City 15 Minute Play Festival features 35 to 40 original short plays chosen from more than 300 submissions from new playwrights across the country. Five plays are presented each of the festival's first seven evenings with the audience voting each night to select the best. Winning plays move on to the finals and two additional performances where a panel of judges chooses winners in three categories: Best Play, Best Direction and Best Performance, and where the audience votes for overall Audience Favorites. The Festival closing night on May 5 features an awards presentation and a closing night party to which the audience is invited to attend.

Final performances are May 4 at 9:00 p.m. and May 5 at 7:30 p.m. Tickets can be obtained at http://www.brownpapertickets.com/event/235517
