Montclair Town Council Honors MKA Sophomore with a Proclamation

15 April 2015

Congratulations to MKA sophomore John Gouwar who was honored with a Proclamation from the Montclair Town Council at their monthly meeting on April 14 for his Eagle Scout project, Montclair Snow Buddies.

The project, which went into effect this past winter, was modeled after a similar program in Colorado and provided young volunteers to assist senior citizens with snow removal, helping to promote a safer environment for seniors and fostering relationships between the generations.

John, a member of Montclair Troop 8, developed the project in conjunction with the Township's Health and Human Services Department and the Montclair Senior Citizen Advisory Committee over the fall of 2014.He recruited and organized four student volunteers from MKA, Montclair High School and Montclair Middle Schools, and developed a handbook and Facebook page for information. The Senior Citizen Advisory Committee sourced the seniors and local merchants provided snow shovels and discounts on rock salt to assist the volunteers.

After receiving the Proclamation that recognized his outstanding accomplishments, John made a presentation to the Town Council, explaining his plans to replicate the program with other local community organizations by sharing the paperwork and technology necessary for implementation.
