Pennies for Peace Wins Big at MKA Students vs. Faculty Basketball Game
Reaction to this year's annual MKA Middle School Student vs. Faculty Basketball Game for charity held earlier this month was perfectly summed up by fourth grade teacher, Susan FitzGibbon: "I felt so proud to be part of this community event that requires the efforts of all of us. I can't wait to hear what the final tally for Pennies for Peace will be. I know we made a huge deposit in the school spirit bank!"
The final financial tally was also huge. This popular event not only resulted in a down-to-the-wire win for the students, but also, together with the sale of game T-shirts and an associated campus-wide coin drive, in a remarkable $10,000 donation to Pennies for Peace.
The charity, selected by the Middle School Student Government, builds schools and helps children in Afghanistan and Pakistan, and as Student Government faculty advisor and event organizer Laura Lemaire told her faculty teammates the next day, "Thanks for remembering that the basketball game is not about us - it's about the cause we support each year."
The Basketball game has become one of the most eagerly anticipated highlights of the Middle School year, drawing huge attendance from students, parents, faculty and staff who enjoy not only the game, but also a spirited half-time show, food and music from the Middle School Band.
