Primary School Honors Century-Long Tradition with Maypole Dance

12 May 2025

On Thursday, May 1, under bright spring skies, the Primary School gathered to celebrate one of MKA’s most beloved and enduring traditions: the Maypole Dance.

With roots tracing back to 1909 at The Kimberley School—one of MKA’s founding institutions—the spirit of the event has been thriving for more than 100 years as second-grade students joyfully carry on this annual rite of spring. Through this experience, our youngest learners engage in a hands-on activity that weaves together movement, music, and complex patterns while exercising cooperation and treating others with respect.

As MKA continues to celebrate its 50-year milestone, we take pride in honoring our past in moments such as this by keeping the brightest traditions alive. The Maypole Dance is a beautiful reminder that while much has changed, the heart of the school—its traditions, community, and commitment to meaningful moments—remains strong and deeply rooted.

A very special shoutout to Head of Primary School Katie Banks and her new daughter, Maggie, who were in attendance!
