Upper School Students participate in the Model UN Conference

03 February 2015

From January 29th through February 1st a group of 28 Upper School students participated in the Model United Nations Conference at the University of Pennsylvania. The group included students from all four grade levels including six freshmen and four sets of siblings! Upper School Economics teacher Tom Carroll, now in his ninth year as faculty advisor in our Model UN program said, "this is the largest group that MKA has ever sent to any Model UN conference and is illustrative of the interest that our students are taking in global events." The delegation was lead by seniors Lisa Goldsman and Alex Geyelin, both multi-year participants. This year marked the 31st anniversary of the founding of the UPenn conference and was attended by over 3,000 high school students from 125 schools in 11 countries from across the world.

The MKA delegation represented the countries of the Philippines, Norway and Azerbaijan. The students debated such topics as economic growth, global health and disarmament. They had a chance not only to work with other MKA students but also to establish new friendships with students from other schools that often carry over from year to year. When students were not in committee meetings they had a chance to sightsee in Philadelphia, take a tour of the University and sample the culinary flavors of the city at famous Reading Terminal Market.
