Young MKA Scientists meet with Success
MKA’s young scientists have met with some recent attention. At the Science Olympiad Regional Competition held earlier this month at the New Jersey Institute of Technology, a team of fifteen 6th, 7th and 8th grade students from the MKA Middle School participated and came away with some success.
8th graders Thea Flurry and Anna Sheinaus gained first place in the Ecology event, a written test about topics such as food webs, energy pyramids, population dynamics, nutrient cycling, human impact upon ecosystems (including climate change, invasive species and acid rain) and other concepts in the field of ecology.
6th graders Nicole Szcech and Brandon Neglio came in sixth place in the Biology Blitz event that required students to research the classification of a list of organisms. They needed to recognize pictures and know the phylum or division, class and some relevant facts about organisms from the plant, fungi and protist kingdoms. While the 8th grade team of Anant Singh and Kendrick Semonche garnered tenth place in the Crave the Wave event (testing knowledge of waves and wave motion), and classmates Matt Timmons and Josh Logan-Rung also came tenth in the Write It-Do-It event, a technical writing and building challenge.
Last spring, eleven Upper School seniors taking a Global Science course presented projects at Fairleigh Dickinson University’s Green Day as the culmination of their class work. In the High School division, Johnny Borbone won first prize for his “Improved Campus Design” project, Dan Barlekamp and Justin Puglisi received second place for their “Solar Hot Water Heating and Skylights” project, Sydney Schatz received third place for her work on a “Green Cleaning Product” and Brian Cedrowski received an Honorable Mention for work on Styrofoam recycling. These results are currently posted on the University’s website at http://view.fdu/default.aspx?id=4910 .
