MKA Athletes Claim Championships and Break Records
The last week has proved an exciting one for MKA athletics as two varsity teams claimed championship titles in home games on Van Brunt Field, and two athletes broke individual MKA scoring records.
On November 3, the Boys' Varsity Soccer Team (15-2-1) led by Coach Jordan Raper, won their first-ever SEC (Super Essex Conference) American Division League Championship. Ryan Fennelly '14headed in the game winner from a free kick from Matt Lane '13 with 5:30 left in double overtime giving the Cougars a 1-0 win over Glen Ridge. The SEC American Division is considered the most competitive and best soccer conference in New Jersey and in addition to MKA and Glen Ridge, includes teams from Livingston, Millburn, Montclair, Seton Hall Prep, West Essex and West Orange.
The following weekend, on November 11, the Girls’ Varsity Field Hockey Team (16-3) led by Coach Injoo Han, captured the NJ Prep B State Championship, defeating Princeton Day School 2-0. The Cougars were led by goals from Gina Guccione '14 and Jasmine Cole '13, and preserving the shutout was goalie Mollie Peek '13. This is the team’s third Prep B State Championship in the last 4 years. Jasmine Cole also broke MKA’s individual scoring record for Field Hockey earlier in the month when she achieved 33 goals in one season on November 5. Congratulations also go to Olivia Vaughn ’16, who broke MKA’s individual scoring record for Girls’ Soccer that same week by scoring 23 goals in one season.
